P200 for Boys & Girls, part 3

As I have posted before, Pentel Japan released the P200 for Boys & Girls in 2016, then in 2018, Pentel Brazil released their version of the P200 for Boys & Girls in 3 sizes.  This year, Brazil released a sixth color for their sets.

Well, also this year, Pentel Japan, working with Loft stores in Japan, released a revised version of their Boys & Girls set.  This set makes a minor change to the text on the pencil.  Instead of saying “Automatic Pencil P200 0.5  P205”, it now says “Automatic Pencil P205 0.5  P205”, as you can see in the picture above, with the new set in front, and the 2016 set in the back.

Other than that change, and the addition of the letters LF to the end of the part number, nothing else has changed.  They are still the same quality pencils that Pentel has always released.  All of these pencils still have the same price sticker (300 ¥) and same color names in Japanese, of which the following are my best translations.

P200 for BOYS & GIRLS, Parte Dois

Every year since 2012, at least one division of Pentel has released a new series of P200 pencils, somewhere in the world.  In early August this year it was Japan with the P200 for Clena, then about a week later, it was Brazil with their version of the P200 for Boys & Girls. I just received my pencils from Brazil this past week.

Differences

This post is about the Brazilian version of the pencils Japan released in 2016 (http://www.pentel.co.jp/special/7711/), which were manufactured in Brazil. The Brazilian versions are different in several respects from the Japanese version.
1. The text of the pencils is different between the two versions.  The Japanese version is all new, where the Brazilian version just adds the “P200 BOYS & GIRLS” in front of the standard text:
Japanese: Automatic Pencil P200 0.5   P205
Brazilian: P200 BOYS & GIRLS 0.5mm Pentel P205
2. Brazil changed the color of the text on all the pencils to Dark Blue except the Dark Blue pencil, they left white.
3. Brazil manufactures these in 0.5mm, 0.7mm & 0.9mm, where Japan only released these in 0.5mm.
4. Brazil used the standard black Inner Body instead of the white Inner Body that Japan used on their version of these pencils. P200 for BOYS & GIRLS Inner Body.jpg

Color Codes

When I was entering these pencils into my tracking system, I found that Brazil had changed all of the color codes from those of the Japanese versions.  I started trying to make sense of the codes, but could not from the perspective of Pentel’s color code system.web-colour-code-listHere is the list of P205 pencils with first the Japanese Color, then the Japanese Code, then the Brazilian Code.

Japanese Color Japanese Code Brazilian Code
Navy P205BG-C P205-BM
Coral Pink P205BG-P P205-SA
Baby Pink P205BG-P2 P205-LP
Serenity Blue P205BG-S P205-LB
Off-White P205BG-W P205-CW

I could not figure out these codes, other than the P205-LP and -LB, being probably Light Pink and Light Blue.  My wife suggested that the P205-SA is probably Salmon and the P205-CW is some variant of White, probably Cloud White.  Neither one of us could figure out what the M is on the P205-BM, since it is a Dark Blue (Blue Major?).

The main thing I am wondering is, did they get someone in to Pentel Brazil in charge of these that has never worked for Pentel before, and so they did not know to follow the color codes?  What other reason to use these non-Pentel color codes is there?

For all of the images below of the pencils, they start from top to bottom with the Japanese version, then the Brazilian P205, P207 and then the P209.

P200-BM Blue (Major?) / NavyP200-BM

This is the Dark Blue / Navy pencil version of these pencils.  As you can see very similar other than the text and the Cutout, where the Japanese pencil says Japan and the Brazilian ones do not list a country.  The color of the white is a little brighter on the Brazilian pencils.

The IAN codes are:
P205BG-C – 4902506333957
P205-BM – 7898419167123
P207-BM – 7898419167178
P209-BM – 7898419167222

P200-CW Cloud White / Off-WhiteP200-CW

The White version of these pencils all use a blue text, but the Brazilian versions is a little brighter blue than the Japanese.

The IAN codes are:
P205BG-W – 4902506333995
P205-CW – 7898419167093
P207-CW – 7898419167147
P209-CW – 7898419167192

P200-LB Light Blue / Serenity BlueP200-LB

Here is where the text colors start to change dramatically.  The Japanese version in white is hard to read in this picture, but the Brazilian blue really stands out.

The IAN codes are:
P205BG-S – 4902506333988
P205-LB – 7898419167116
P207-LB – 7898419167161
P209-LB – 7898419167215

P200-LP Light Pink / Baby PinkP200-LP

The text color here are both a blue, but again the Brazilian blue pops here.

The IAN codes are:
P205BG-P2 – 4902506333971
P205-LP – 7898419167130
P207-LP – 7898419167185
P209-LP – 7898419167239

P200-SA Salmon / Coral PinkP200-SA

Here, I agree with the Japanese color choice for the text.  I think the red goes much better with this color than the Brazilian blue.

The IAN codes are:
P205BG-P – 4902506333964
P205-SA – 7898419167109
P207-SA – 7898419167154
P209-SA – 7898419167208

Footnote: For the English speakers, Parte Dois is Brazilian Portuguese for Part Two.

Pentel Packaging

Over the years, Pentel has packaged their pencils in many different ways.  Most everybody is familiar with the different retail packages which we have covered in past blogs:
https://nimrodd.net/2017/09/11/retail-packages-in-the-usa-part-1/
https://nimrodd.net/2017/10/15/retail-packages-in-the-usa-part-2/
https://nimrodd.net/2018/02/12/p205-gilded-collection/

This post will be about other packaging that I have encountered.

P200 for Boys & GirlsD - P200BGPack - P200 for Boys & Girls 5-Pack (BG-C,S,P,P2,W) - 2096

These pencils were covered in a previous blog (https://nimrodd.net/2018/03/19/p200-for-boys-girls/).  The first of these pencils I received were shipped as individual pencils, and they went straight into my collection. The next set of these pencils I ordered were shipped to me in the package above.  The package consists of a molded plastic base for the pencils with a plastic cover with Pentel stamped on it.  It is then placed in a Pentel stamped sleeve with a light blue back board and sealed with a strong adhesive strip.

PF337 in SleeveD - PDS-1 - Professional Drafting Pencil (PF337) - 591

I recently (June 2018) purchased this pencil in the protective sleeve.  It came with an instruction sheet. This is a standard Generation 4 PF337 for Film that was manufactured between about 1978 and about 1983.  The sleeve is a brown vinyl sealed to a shorter clear front.  The front is stamped in gold with Pentel and Japan, with nothing on the back.  The insert is a generic Pentel Drop-in Load Mechanical Pencil insert.  It does not mention the P200 series specifically.

PDS-3 Professional Drafting SetD - PDS-3 - Professional Drafting Pencils (P203, P205, P207) - 1244

This is a set of 3 pencils (P203E, P205A & P207C) that was sold as a set under the designation PDS-3.  Of the sets in this blog post, this is the only one I have seen in a Pentel catalog.  I have a copy of the pencil pages from the 1980 Pentel Catalog, and this one is on page 24.
Pentel 1980, p24

I picked this up in May 2017, but it did not have the P207C pencil with it.  The P203E & P205A pencils are both Generation 4, so I wanted to replace the missing pencil with a Gen 4 P207C.  The problem is, this is the one P207C that I do not have in my collection.  I do not know if they had too many Generation 3 pencils, so did not make a Gen 4 or why I have never found one, so at the moment, it is still without its mate in my collection.

The vinyl pouch has a flap that covers the pencils when not in use, and it is stamped with the text:
PROFESSIONAL
DRAFTING
PENCILS
P203          P205          P207
0.3mm     0.5mm      0.7mm
ITEM NO. PDS-3
Pentel

I cannot see it in the catalog, but this also came with an insert, which I have scanned below, showing the front and back.
PDS-3 Insert

PS315N in caseD - PentelCase - Single Pencil Case (PS315N) - 1355

The newest package in my collection, I have had this about 2 weeks.  This is the first version of the PS315 sliding sleeve pencil (Generation 3).  According to the page from the German 1975 catalog this pencil was available at that time, and was replaced by the Blue PS315C in about 1978.  This pencil has a little bit of damage to the text, probably from the plastic clip holding it in the case.

This case is a hard brown plastic with a white softer plastic clip to hold the pencil in place.  It comes with a clear plastic cover that has Pentel molded into the top at the pencil tip end in this picture.

Pentel Presentation SetsD - Present 1 - Pentel Presentation Set (PS523, P207, P209) - 2440D - Present 2 - Pentel Presentation Set (P205, P207, P209) - 2452IMG_0064

I purchased both of these sets in late 2016 from a dealer in the UK.  The first one I received had a PS523D (Gen 4.5), a P207C (Gen 5) and a P209G (Gen 5), along with Super Hi-Polymer HB Lead for each of the 3 sizes.  The 0.3mm lead came with 12 pieces, but the 0.7mm & 0.9mm lead both came with 15 pieces.  Also included is a ZEH-05 block eraser.

The second set came with a P205A, P207C & P209G, all Gen 5.  The included lead for each size all had 15 pieces.  Again the ZEH-05 eraser completed the set.

The bottom picture shows the closed case.

Being Generation 5 pencils, these had to have been put together starting in 1983-1984  to 1991-1993.

P200 for BOYS & GIRLS

In November 2016, Pentel Japan released a set of P205 pencils, lead and erasers that were apparently marketed to teens.  There were 5 pencils, 3 lead containers (with Ain 0.5mm HB lead) and 3 block erasers with different bands around them.  As of this blog post, you can still see the release on the Pentel Japan website (http://www.pentel.co.jp/special/7711/ ).

P200 for Boys & Girls

To me, this seemed to be strange marketing material.  As far as I know, this was only released in Japan, but the pictures appear to be of Caucasian teens. I am not sure why they would not use Japanese teens to promote this.

I received my first set of pencils in January 2017, and they immediately went into my display cases.  A couple of months later, I found some sets in a package and purchased them as well.D - P200BGPack - P200 for Boys & Girls 5-Pack (BG-C,S,P,P2,W) - 2096

All of these pencils are the same except for the color and the sticker on them.  They all read on the side “Automatic Pencil P200 0.5     P205”.
