Pentel Packaging

Over the years, Pentel has packaged their pencils in many different ways.  Most everybody is familiar with the different retail packages which we have covered in past blogs:

This post will be about other packaging that I have encountered.

These pencils were covered in a previous blog (https://nimrodd.net/2018/03/19/p200-for-boys-girls/).  The first of these pencils I received were shipped as individual pencils, and they went straight into my collection. The next set of these pencils I ordered were shipped to me in the package above.  The package consists of a molded plastic base for the pencils with a plastic cover with Pentel stamped on it.  It is then placed in a Pentel stamped sleeve with a light blue back board and sealed with a strong adhesive strip.

PF337 in SleeveD - PDS-1 - Professional Drafting Pencil (PF337) - 591

I recently (June 2018) purchased this pencil in the protective sleeve.  It came with an instruction sheet. This is a standard Generation 4 PF337 for Film that was manufactured between about 1978 and about 1983.  The sleeve is a brown vinyl sealed to a shorter clear front.  The front is stamped in gold with Pentel and Japan, with nothing on the back.  The insert is a generic Pentel Drop-in Load Mechanical Pencil insert.  It does not mention the P200 series specifically.

PDS-3 Professional Drafting SetD - PDS-3 - Professional Drafting Pencils (P203, P205, P207) - 1244

This is a set of 3 pencils (P203E, P205A & P207C) that was sold as a set under the designation PDS-3.  Of the sets in this blog post, this is the only one I have seen in a Pentel catalog.  I have a copy of the pencil pages from the 1980 Pentel Catalog, and this one is on page 24.

I picked this up in May 2017, but it did not have the P207C pencil with it.  The P203E & P205A pencils are both Generation 4, so I wanted to replace the missing pencil with a Gen 4 P207C.  The problem is, this is the one P207C that I do not have in my collection.  I do not know if they had too many Generation 3 pencils, so did not make a Gen 4 or why I have never found one, so at the moment, it is still without its mate in my collection.

The vinyl pouch has a flap that covers the pencils when not in use, and it is stamped with the text:

PS315N in caseD - PentelCase - Single Pencil Case (PS315N) - 1355

The newest package in my collection, I have had this about 2 weeks.  This is the first version of the PS315 sliding sleeve pencil (Generation 3).  According to the page from the German 1975 catalog this pencil was available at that time, and was replaced by the Blue PS315C in about 1978.  This pencil has a little bit of damage to the text, probably from the plastic clip holding it in the case.

This case is a hard brown plastic with a white softer plastic clip to hold the pencil in place.  It comes with a clear plastic cover that has Pentel molded into the top at the pencil tip end in this picture.

I purchased both of these sets in late 2016 from a dealer in the UK.  The first one I received had a PS523D (Gen 4.5), a P207C (Gen 5) and a P209G (Gen 5), along with Super Hi-Polymer HB Lead for each of the 3 sizes.  The 0.3mm lead came with 12 pieces, but the 0.7mm & 0.9mm lead both came with 15 pieces.  Also included is a ZEH-05 block eraser.

The second set came with a P205A, P207C & P209G, all Gen 5.  The included lead for each size all had 15 pieces.  Again the ZEH-05 eraser completed the set.

The bottom picture shows the closed case.

Being Generation 5 pencils, these had to have been put together starting in 1983-1984  to 1991-1993.

P209G Pencils

This post is about the standard 0.9mm yellow pencil and the changes it has gone through since 1970 or 1971 when it was released.

Generation 1b (Short Tip)
P209G (Gen 1b) - Short Tip - 651

This is a very recent acquisition from March 2017 and in most respects is a standard Generation 1b pencil (see next pencil). The major difference is the short 2mm guide pipe on the tip, as opposed to the standard 4mm guide pipe. Up until this point, I believed that the only tip available for the 0.9mm pencils was the standard 4mm tip.

Generation 1b
P209G (Gen 1b) - 603

This is the standard Generation 1b that I have seen.  It has does not have the P205 molded into the cutout (a characteristic of Generations 1 & 1a of other models). It also has the 0.9 m/m printed on the bottom, with no other printing on the pencil. I picked this one up in September of 2016.

Generation 4
P209G (Gen 4) - 321

This is was the first older P209 pencil I picked up back in 2012.  I got it because of the obvious difference in the text (m/m vs. mm in the size).  This was before I started identifying the different generations of pencils.

Generation 4.5
P209G (Gen 4.5) - 852

I got this pencil in a batch of pencils I purchased for other reasons in May 2017. When I was buying the batch, I did not know this was anything other than a Generation 5 or 6, due to the text on the side. At that time, I did not know that the P209 had any of this generation. When cataloging pencils into my database, I take them apart and identify all of the components of the pencil. When I opened this one up, I was surprised to see the inner body with a brass spring cap. This has happened a few times when I purchase batches of pencils, and it is always enjoyable to find something you don’t have like this.

Generation 5
P209G (Gen 5) - 312

I picked this pencil up in September 2016. When trying to get specific generations of pencils, it is sometimes hard to tell online from the pictures, as they either are not a high enough resolution to see the mark in the cutout, or to see the bottom of the pencils in other cases.

Generation 6
P209G (Gen 6) - 309

This was the first P209 pencil I got when I started collecting mechanical pencils back in 2009. At this point, I do not know where I got it from, only the date, as I did not keep that information at that time, and I cannot find any e-mails concerning this purchase.

An interesting thing about this pencil (as well as my first Generation 6 P203E, P205A & P207C) I just noticed in the past couple of weeks, is that it is of French registration.  The barcode for this pencil is 3474372209007, which is an IAN-13 barcode that is registered to EUROPENTEL SAS in France. As I say, I don’t know where I got this from, it is just interesting that it ended up here in the US, instead of the US barcoded pencils.

 

Also, as you can see, I skipped over Generations 2 & 3, as those are ones I am still looking for.  I also do not have Generation 1a, but I don’t know for sure if this model exists.
