Pentel Packaging

Over the years, Pentel has packaged their pencils in many different ways. Most everybody is familiar with the different retail packages which we have covered in past blogs:

This post will be about other packaging that I have encountered.

P200 for Boys & Girls

These pencils were covered in a previous blog (https://nimrodd.net/2018/03/19/p200-for-boys-girls/). The first of these pencils I received were shipped as individual pencils, and they went straight into my collection. The next set of these pencils I ordered were shipped to me in the package above. The package consists of a molded plastic base for the pencils with a plastic cover with Pentel stamped on it. It is then placed in a Pentel stamped sleeve with a light blue back board and sealed with a strong adhesive strip.

PF337 in Sleeve

I recently (June 2018) purchased this pencil in the protective sleeve. It came with an instruction sheet. This is a standard Generation 4 PF337 for Film that was manufactured between about 1978 and about 1983. The sleeve is a brown vinyl sealed to a shorter clear front. The front is stamped in gold with Pentel and Japan, with nothing on the back. The insert is a generic Pentel Drop-in Load Mechanical Pencil insert. It does not mention the P200 series specifically.

PDS-3 Professional Drafting Set

This is a set of 3 pencils (P203E, P205A & P207C) that was sold as a set under the designation PDS-3. Of the sets in this blog post, this is the only one I have seen in a Pentel catalog. I have a copy of the pencil pages from the 1980 Pentel Catalog, and this one is on page 24.

I picked this up in May 2017, but it did not have the P207C pencil with it. The P203E & P205A pencils are both Generation 4, so I wanted to replace the missing pencil with a Gen 4 P207C. The problem is, this is the one P207C that I do not have in my collection. I do not know if they had too many Generation 3 pencils, so did not make a Gen 4 or why I have never found one, so at the moment, it is still without its mate in my collection.

The vinyl pouch has a flap that covers the pencils when not in use, and it is stamped with the text:

I cannot see it in the catalog, but this also came with an insert, which I have scanned below, showing the front and back.

PS315N in case

The newest package in my collection, I have had this about 2 weeks. This is the first version of the PS315 sliding sleeve pencil (Generation 3). According to the page from the German 1975 catalog this pencil was available at that time, and was replaced by the Blue PS315C in about 1978. This pencil has a little bit of damage to the text, probably from the plastic clip holding it in the case.

This case is a hard brown plastic with a white softer plastic clip to hold the pencil in place. It comes with a clear plastic cover that has Pentel molded into the top at the pencil tip end in this picture.

Pentel Presentation Sets

I purchased both of these sets in late 2016 from a dealer in the UK. The first one I received had a PS523D (Gen 4.5), a P207C (Gen 5) and a P209G (Gen 5), along with Super Hi-Polymer HB Lead for each of the 3 sizes. The 0.3mm lead came with 12 pieces, but the 0.7mm & 0.9mm lead both came with 15 pieces. Also included is a ZEH-05 block eraser.

The second set came with a P205A, P207C & P209G, all Gen 5. The included lead for each size all had 15 pieces. Again the ZEH-05 eraser completed the set.

The bottom picture shows the closed case.

Being Generation 5 pencils, these had to have been put together starting in 1983-1984 to 1991-1993.

Brazilian P200s, part 1

In 2003, Pentel opened a branch in Brazil and began to manufacture pens and pencils there. At some point they began manufacturing the P200 pencils in the standard sizes and colors (P203E, P205A, P205B, P205D, P207C and P209G). Now all of these (and future releases) were released in Brazil with ‘PB’ (Pentel Brazil) at the end of the model number (in their catalogs, at least), so the P205A was released as P205-APB. I have no way of knowing for sure, but I believe that only the outer body is manufactured in Brazil, and all of the other components are brought in from Japan, as the clip still says Japan on it.

I believe that this was the first time that Pentel manufactured the P200 pencils outside of Japan, and thus, in the second line of the cutout, it does not say JAPAN. In fact it does not say anything, except for the mark.Note, that some of the pencils released exclusively in Brazil were manufactured in Japan and say JAPAN in the cutout. I will mention that when I cover those pencils.

In 2009, Pentel Brazil began releasing color P200s that are only available in Brazil. Today I will be covering the biggest selection of these, the COLLECTION COLORS.

Another point is that these pencils are released either as a single pencil with the barcode sticker attached, or they were released as a carded retail package with a different barcode. Of the 58 pencils I purchased from Brazil (includes some duplicates), I only received 7 in the retail package, so I don’t have complete barcode information for those. The barcode information below is for the individual releases.

As far as I can tell, for the COLLECTED COLORS, these pencils are shown here in release order. I may write something later about how I determined this.

P200-WPB White

The P205-WPB White pencil was the first Brazilian color released in 2009. From a blog post I have found, I know the Blue text version of the P207-WPB was released in 2010. The P203-WPB and P209-WPB were then released in 2011, when they started expanding their line to other color pencils.

I have no way to verify this, but I suspect that they were going to make the text the color of the original line of P200s (0.3mm = brown, 0.5mm = black, 0.7mm = blue and 0.9mm = yellow), but when they started releasing other colors of pencils and changed their plans to release the other white pencils with black text. In my mind, this is the only thing that makes sense about why they P207 has blue text.

Up until 2017, they kept making the P207 with blue text, but in 2017, they replaced the blue text version with the black text version. Replaced is the key word here, as they kept the same barcode for the black text pencil.

All versions of this pencil were manufactured in Brazil.

I received the first four (blue text P207) in the above mentioned April 2017 shipment, with the P205 & P209 being packaged. In May 2018, I received the black text P207 from anther friend from Brazil.

P200-FRPB Ferrari Red

These pencils are a brighter red than any other color released (other than neons). These were all manufactured in Brazil. These pencils were released in 2011.

I received these in a large shipment from a friend in Brazil in April 2017.

P200-PPB Light Pink

This one is a little out of order, but makes sense when looking at the next color. The colors in these pictures are a little washed out and the actual pencils are a little more pink than shown above. These were all manufactured in Brazil.

This series was released in 2011, and discontinued and replaced by the P200-PNPB Pink.

P200-ZPB Silver

These Silver pencils are a very different color from the other silver P200 pencils, with these not having a metallic component, just a silver/light gray color. Compare these to the P205M-Z and the P205MZX from the P205 Metallics post or the blank silver P205-Z from the European Oddballs post. These were among the first non-white colors released in 2011.

These P205-ZPB pencils were all manufactured in Brazil.

These were the first Brazilian pencils I purchased. I got them from Andrey543 on eBay in September 2016, before I ever got in contact with anyone in Brazil.

P200-LPB Lilac

These are a light purple in color and were all manufactured in Brazil. These pencils were released in 2014.

Again, I received these with the large shipment in April 2017.

P200-MTAPB Matt Black

These are the same matt black that were seen in the European Oddballs post, and like those, were all manufactured in Japan.

I kind of believe that these may have been the latest pencils to be released since unlike most of the others, this has Collection in front of the normal text. They were released in 2014, but later in production than the P200-LPB Lilac.

P200-XPB Gold

Like the Matt Black pencils above, these Gold pencils also include Collection before the normal text, leading me to believe the two colors are the latest releases from 2014. The gold of these pencils are different from the P205M-X or the P205M-X50 from the P205 Metallics post or the P209-X Kirari from the P209 Kirari post.

I received one of these (P207) in a retail package, and it was manufactured in Brazil, but the other 3 were all manufactured in Japan.

P200-PNPB Pink

These are the currently available Pink pencils in Brazil, and were manufactured in Brazil. These replaced the P200-PPB Light Pink pencil in 2015.

I received all of these in the retail packaging, but unusually, one of these (the P203) also had the individual barcode sticker on it, which none of the other retail pack pencils had.

P200, P200 Family

European Oddballs

A lot of collectors here in the Americas (North and South) have seen the leftmost pencil (P205-GA Carbon Fiber) in the above image, but very few have seen the other five.

I will talk a little about the barcodes associate with these pencils in the post below. If you would like to know more about barcodes, you can check out my previous post about this subject at https://nimrodd.net/2017/12/04/barcodes/.

P205-MN Metallic Graphite (Blank)

This color code is also called Anthracite in other areas of the world. The barcode on this pencil is 3474372050029. This barcode is registered out of EuroPentel in France. I received it back in April of this year from a friend in Brazil.

P205-MTA Matt Black (Blank)

This pencil, along with the next two were purchased from http://www.artwaremail.ch/ out of Switzerland when I made my purchases of the Retro and Neon P205 sets, back in March 2017. The barcode on this pencil is 3474372050944, again registered out of EuroPentel.

P205-WN White (Blank)

This pencil’s barcode is 7610924040155. This barcode is not registered to Pentel, but is apparently from a block where you can just purchase individual barcodes from a block out of Switzerland.

P207-MTA Matt Black

Unlike the P205-MTA Matt Black, this one has the standard text on the side. The barcode is 3474372207034 and is registered out of EuroPentel.

P205-GA Carbon Fiber

I picked up this pencil from https://www.jetpens.com in 2013. I really like the look of the interwoven carbon fibers and for the longest time, I assumed that it had been distributed from Japan, but according to the barcode (3474372050609), it is registered out of EuroPentel.

As of this blog post, it is still available from Jetpens and elsewhere.

P207-GA Carbon Fiber

This rarity also came from Artwaremail in Switzerland, and was the last of their stock. I had never seen, nor heard of this pencil before they said that they had this. It is the same carbon fiber body as the P205-GA and the barcode is 3474372207010, registered out of EuroPentel.

Swiss Limited Edition P205 Pencils

Hello, long time no post.

To the best of my knowledge, in 2013 or 2014, Pentel Papeteriewaren AG (Pentel Switzerland) began to release limited edition P205 pencils. Up to now, they have released 3 sets of 4 pencils. Unfortunately, I found out about these in 2017 after the first set had already sold out.

Druckbleistift Metallic Limited Edition

This set of 4 limited edition metallic P205 pencils did not have any text on them.
The colors available look to be:

P205-MV – Metallic Violet
P205-MX – Gold
P205-MC – Metallic Blue
P205-Z – Silver

I did get hold of this pencil when I ordered the other two sets below from http://www.artwaremail.ch, but that was all of the metallics they had left.
This is one of those pencils that is registered with EuroPentel in France, but was only sold in Switzerland (as far as I can tell). It is the standard Metallic Silver of other P200 pencils and the barcode is 3474372050012.

I am going to skip the 2015 release for the moment and look at the set that was released in 2016.

Druckbleistift Vintage/Retro Limited Edition

These pencils were all molded in white plastic, then painted and then the paint rubbed off on the edges, giving them a well used look. All of these are registered out of EuroPentel, but as far as I can tell, only sold in Switzerland. As I said, this looks to have been released in 2016, and I got mine in January 2017.

P205-RA – Vintage/Retro Black

This is a black pencil with barcode 3474372150019.

P205-RB – Vintage/Retro Red

This is a red or maroon pencil with barcode 3474372150026.

P205-RC – Vintage/Retro Blue

This is a light blue pencil with barcode 3474372150033.

P205-RE – Vintage/Retro Brown

This is a brown pencil with barcode 3474372150040.

Druckbleistift Neon/Fluorescent Limited Edition

Now for the pencils that were released in Switzerland in 2015. Again, registered with EuroPentel, and sold in Switzerland (but see below). These again were all molded in white and painted in the bright colors. As I said above, I got these in 2017 when I got the Vintage/Retro set.

P205-FF – Neon/Fluorescent Orange

This is a bright Orange pencil with barcode 3474372050074.

P205-FG – Neon/Fluorescent Yellow

This is a bright Yellow pencil with barcode 3474372050081.

P205-FK – Neon/Fluorescent Green

This pencil is supposed to be Green, but it is more Yellow with a Green tint. For me, it is hard to tell that this is the green unless I have the yellow beside it. The barcode is 3474372050098.

P205-FP – Neon/Fluorescent Pink

This is a bright Pink pencil with barcode 3474372050104.

In 2017, I found out that a company in Australia (http://www.larrypost.com.au/) was selling the Neon/Fluorescent Limited Edition pencils, but not only were they selling the 4 that Switzerland sold, they were selling one more.

Update 2018-07-01

Right before I posted this blog originally, I ordered this pencil from http://www.larrypost.com.au/. Ten days later I received a package from Australia, about 2 weeks earlier than I expected.

P205-FB – Neon/Fluorescent Red

P200 for BOYS & GIRLS

In November 2016, Pentel Japan released a set of P205 pencils, lead and erasers that were apparently marketed to teens. There were 5 pencils, 3 lead containers (with Ain 0.5mm HB lead) and 3 block erasers with different bands around them. As of this blog post, you can still see the release on the Pentel Japan website (http://www.pentel.co.jp/special/7711/ ).

To me, this seemed to be strange marketing material. As far as I know, this was only released in Japan, but the pictures appear to be of Caucasian teens. I am not sure why they would not use Japanese teens to promote this.

I received my first set of pencils in January 2017, and they immediately went into my display cases. A couple of months later, I found some sets in a package and purchased them as well.

All of these pencils are the same except for the color and the sticker on them. They all read on the side “Automatic Pencil P200 0.5 P205”.

This pencil is Navy and the barcode is 4902506333957.

Pentel P209 Kirari Pencils

In the United States, Pentel had been distributing alternate colors of the P205 since 2010. The Kiraris were the first size I found after the P205s.

In 2014, Pentel Japan released the Kirari line in 3 colors; Cherry Pink, Violet & Gold. They released Brush Pens, Gel Pens and these Pencils.

I picked up my first set of these pencils in December 2014 from an eBay dealer out of Japan. Finally in 2016, I started to collect the pencils in their original packaging and bought another set in September from a couple of different Japanese dealers.

I am not sure why, but the packages number these pencils as XP209 instead of just P209, as is printed on the pencils.

In my experience, the Pentel color code V has always represented Violet, but for this pencil, I have seen it called Muave.

I apologize for the photos of the pencils themselves, as the color did not turn out very well. I may end up going back and taking these pictures again and replacing them.

Singapore P205 Pencils

I do not remember when I first saw these pencil, but they were first released in 2013 in Singapore. My first encounter with these was actually the White one that was later released in Canada in a 2-pack with a standard black P205A, when I purchased it in December 2014. This was also the first time I had encountered a P200 pencil with printing, that did not print the model number printed on it.

I finally got a hold of a full set of these in September 2016 from a dealer in Singapore. I ordered them off eBay and received the 5 pencils above. I later ordered another set and the dealer sent them to me in the original packages, which came with a package of Ain 0.5 2B lead.

The original set are in my display cases and the packaged set is on my display board.

P205-BSG

This is the Red version of the pencil. As I said above, this set of pencils are the first time I encountered this short style of printed text.

As far as I have seen, this pencil, along with the next two (CSG & GSG), are only available from Singapore.

The Yellow version. I do like the contrast of the red text on the yellow pencil.

The Pink version available from Singapore, and supposedly from Canada (as P205-P). In June 2016, Pentel Canada announced pink versions of several of their pens and pencils in support of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (http://pentel.ca/news/16). I have not been able to get one of these, but I believe it should be the same as the Singapore version. As of this post, it still shows as being available on the Pentel Canada website.

The white version from Singapore and Canada. As I said, this pencil was released in a 2-pack, but I have never seen any mention of it on the Pentel Canada website.

P200, P200 Family

Pentel Stein P303S / P305S Pencils

The next several blogs are going to be about P200 family pencils that were not sold in the USA. Most of these pencils also have a barcode that shows where that pencil was registered.

The Stein pencils were released back in 2012 in 0.3mm (P303S) and 0.5mm (P305S). I purchased a set of the 5 P303S pencils, but I did not try to buy they P305S pencils until they were already gone.

These pencils were all white bodies with 5 different color inks available, all saying the same thing. Except for the name STEIN, all of the text reads with the pencil oriented with the eraser on top and the tip at the bottom. From the top (near the eraser), is the size designation with 3 lines on each side of the .3 or .5. Below that are four lines of text:

Below this is the word “STEIN x” in the normal orientation for the P200 pencils. The only place that Pentel appears is in the first line of the cutout.

P303S-AW / P305S-AW

These pencils are white with black text. Even though I did not purchase the set of P305S pencils back in 2012, I managed to get one P305S-AW in July of 2017.

This pencil is white with blue text.

This pencil is white with green text.

P303S-FW

This one is white with orange text.

P303S-PW

The last pencil is white with pink text.

I am not absolutely positive, but I believe these were released as one of the first items in the Stein line of pencils that Pentel is now releasing.

Japanese Older Releases & Oddities

This post is going to be about the P320 series and another couple of oddball numbered pencils.

First I will go over the more common P320 pencils (although they are not that easy to find). Then I will go over some other P320 pencils and another couple numbered P533.

P323E Generation 4.5 (Italic)

This is the pencil you see when you look up a P323. It is the standard brown (for 0.3 mm) and the text is the short text (size then model) that is seen on other pencils, except the size is in italic.

I am not sure when, nor from whom I actually acquired this pencil, as I do not find the receipt, but it was probably around 2010. I do know that it was the first of the pencils in this blog that I got.

P325A Generation 5 (Italic)

Again this is the pencil you see when you look up this model of pencil. This pencil I picked up in May of this year along with the P327C. I picked it up on eBay from a seller, who apparently found several sets of these, as he keeps posting a few of them every month or so.

P327C Generation 5 (Italic)

This is actually the second of these pencils that I acquired. The first one was in excellent condition, but did not have the price sticker on it, so when this one showed up on eBay, I bought it (along with the above P325A).

P329G Generation 5 (Italic)

This completes the set of P320 pencils that are commonly seen when looking these up on the internet. I never did see this come up on eBay, but another collector asked the above seller if he had any of these and he found a couple and I ended up purchasing this one in June of this year.

P323E Generation 4 (non-Italic)

This pencil and the following one that I purchased are the only times I have ever seen this style of P323. This is an older pencil than the above series, as it uses the “/” in the size. Also, it uses the full standard text with size, Pentel and model, as opposed to the short version (size & model) above. Also if you see, it has a different style (rounded triangle) price sticker than was used on the pencils above (rectangle). I am not sure if this has any significance, as the price is the same on all of the pencils in this blog, ¥500.

I purchased this and the one below in September of last year from an eBay seller I have purchased many pencils from.

P323E Generation 4.5 (non-Italic)

This is the next generation of the above pencil, where Pentel dropped the “/” from the size along with other changes to the outer body, but still apparently had stock of the previous generation inner body.

P327A Generation 4.5 (Blank)

I identify this pencil as a P327A because that is what I was told that it was by the seller I mentioned above that I have done business with for years (I purchased this in October 2014). The only identifying information is that it is a 0.7mm tip and inner body, and the sticker on it identifies it as a 0.7mm.

There is nothing to identify it specifically as a P327, other than the sellers information, so it was kind of an ambiguous P200 pencil. In doing other research, I came across a sold listing on eBay for a similar P325A pencil that had no other marking other than the triangular 0.5mm price sticker, and it was from a different seller in a different country.

So with two different sources identifying this style of P320 series, I decided to use that designation for my pencil.

From the pencils above, it looks like there may have been as many as 3 different styles of the P320 series pencils manufactured over the years.

P533A Generation 4 (Short Text)

When I saw these pencils online (and purchased it from the seller mentioned in the last 3 pencils), it was the first, ~~and only,~~ time I have seen this model of pencil. [While writing this post, I decided to look to see if I could find any other information on this pencil, and I found a closed auction on Yahoo Japan for one of these pencils.]

This pencil uses a black body with the modified short text with the bullet, “•”, between the size (using the “/”) and model. It also includes a smaller triangular price sticker.

I purchased this pencil in September 2016.

P533A Generation 4 (Standard Text)

The only difference between this and the prior pencil is the use of the standard text (size, Pentel & model) and the larger triangular price sticker.

I am almost ashamed to admit that when these two pencils were posted for sale online, I did not immediately pick up on the difference between the two, so I only purchased the one above. Once I received it, I looked back at the auction for this one, and immediately kicked myself for not ordering it, since at that point it was obvious what the differences were.

In my eBay search, I do look for other sizes of these pencils (P535, P537 & P539), but I do not expect to find them, as this appears to have been a one-off. The 535 designation is used on the Pentel PS535, which is a completely different type of pencil from the P200 family of pencils, and I do not expect that Pentel would make both a P535 and a PS535, if only to avoid confusion. So this will go down as one of Pentel’s pencil oddities.

P200 Family, Pentel

P210 Series

This series of pencils is kind of an oddball. Most other series (besides the original P203/P205/P207/P209 pencils) have a purpose behind them that you can see. For example the PF330 series for Film and the Sliding Sleeve pencils. I am not sure what the purpose behind this series was, nor why some of them had the odd short carry clip on them.

This short carry clip, comes out the bottom of the band, which will make the pencil sit almost 1/2″ (12.5mm) higher out of the pocket. When I first received these pencils, all but one of them used this short clip, so my assumption was that this is what these pencils came with, and someone changed out the clip on the one that used the standard clip. I have come to find out in corresponding with other collectors, that it looks like some also came with the standard clip, as they received a bunch of them with that.

The time these were available also seems to have been very limited, probably starting around 1990-91 for the Generation 5 pencils (based on the scarcity of these) and probably ending in the late 90’s with Generation 6. According to some correspondence, it looks like the Generation 6 pencils were released around 1992.

I first acquired all of my P210 series pencils in March 2010 from about 3 different sources. I could only get 1 each of the Generation 5 pencils, but got a bundle of 5 of each of the Generation 6. Even now, you can still easily get Generation 6 P215 & P217 pencils off eBay, so this supports my supposition that the Generation 5 pencils were only manufactured for 1-2 years in low volume and the Generation 6 pencils were produced over a longer period and/or at a much higher volume.

P215A Generation 5 Black

The first version of the P215 is the “A” version in black that matches the P205. The only differences are that the text is in gray instead of white and the short carry clip.

P215N Generation 6 Gray

The common version of the P215 that you can find now is the “N” Gray body with white text. Mine came with the short carry clip.

P217C Generation 5 Blue

Of the P210 series I own, this is the only one I purchased that had a standard clip on it. This Generation 5 uses the same body as the P207C, only with gray text instead of white.

P217C Generation 6 Dark Blue

Again, the Generation 6 version of the P210 series changed from the color of the P200 series. This P217 is still a “C”, but it is dark blue with white text instead of the lighter blue. It is even darker than the PS315C.

P219G Generation 5 Yellow

The Generation 5 of the P219 is the same yellow as the P209, but again with gray text and the short carry clip.

P219B Generation 6 Red

This last P219 pencil really stands out in red (code “B”), with the white text. Again the change of color from Generation 5 to Generation 6. The only reason I can think of to do this would be to prevent confusion between the P200 series and the Generation 5 P210 series.
